Spent catalytic converters in the UAE change hands at roughly AED 550 to 2,570 per unit, on figures published by the recycler Recohub in September 2026, because rhodium now sits near $8,500 an ounce against the $29,800 it touched on 23 March 2021. Per-unit cash offers usually land 20 to 40 percent below de-can-and-assay settlement, and no converter is worth anything without chain-of-custody paperwork.

What is rhodium worth now, and why does one metal set the price?

Kitco quoted rhodium at $8,500 bid and $9,500 ask on 18 October 2026, showing a trading range of $7,200 to $10,600. Other dealer pages that week and after were higher: Money Metals Exchange showed $9,700 on the same date, goldsilver.ai showed $9,150 in early December 2026, and metametals.com showed $328.18 a gram, or $10,207 an ounce, in late November with a 30-day move of minus 5.6 percent. That spread between published quotes is not sloppiness. It is the market.

Rhodium has no futures contract. There is no exchange-traded rhodium, so pricing runs dealer to dealer over the counter against published refiner benchmarks such as Johnson Matthey's, a point findbullionprices.com made plainly in its August 2026 note. Any buyer in a UAE yard who tells you his offer is "the LME rhodium price" is quoting something that does not exist. Copper works differently, and if you want to see what a genuine exchange reference does to negotiating power, compare how UAE copper scrap tracks the LME almost hour by hour.

The fall is a structural reset off 2021, not a 2026 crash. Rhodium opened 2021 at $17,300 an ounce and peaked at $29,800 in March of that year, according to Capital.com, a spike that Phoenix Refining attributes in part to the failure of Anglo American Platinum's ACP converter plant at Rustenburg. The metal then stabilised in a band of $4,400 to $4,750 in late 2024 before recovering to current levels. For perspective, rhodium traded near $600 an ounce in 2016 and crashed from a June 2008 peak of about $10,000 to under $1,000 by January 2009. This is the most violent price series in the metals complex, and converter pricing inherits all of it.

If rhodium is down, why are some converters holding their value?

Because the rhodium story is not the PGM story. Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of 14 May 2026 recorded significant gains across all five platinum group metals over the preceding year, with platinum, rhodium and ruthenium prices more than doubling, and all PGMs in deficit during 2025. Platinum reached an all-time high in January 2026 after trading between $900 and $1,000 for most of 2024. JM Bullion quoted platinum at $1,644.70 an ounce and palladium at $1,136.43 on 18 October 2026.

Note the order of those two numbers. Platinum is now worth more than palladium, which reverses the 2020 to 2022 ratio that still sits behind a lot of scrap-buying rules of thumb in Dubai and Sharjah. Metals Focus reported in May 2025 that palladium above-ground stocks had fallen to 11.3 million ounces in 2024, the lowest in more than 50 years, while 2025 average prices moved platinum up 1 percent, rhodium up 8 percent and palladium down 5 percent.

Forecasts for 2026 disagree, which is worth knowing before you fix a long-term offtake price. A Reuters analyst survey around September 2026 put the 2026 platinum average at $1,925 and palladium at $1,483, revised down from $2,067 and $1,583 in the prior round. An earlier Reuters poll of 30 analysts in December 2025 had a median platinum average of just $1,550 for 2026 against an expected 2025 average of $1,249.50. Heraeus, in its January 2026 forecast, called platinum $1,300 to $1,800 and palladium $950 to $1,500, expecting PGM prices to reset lower on declining internal combustion engine production and higher recycling rates.

Johnson Matthey also flagged something that matters directly to anyone sitting on converter stock: autocatalyst recycling has been slow to recover, and rhodium recoveries from automotive scrap are heading for a four-year high in 2026. Strong prices are pulling scrap converters back into the chain. JM expects platinum, ruthenium and iridium to stay in deficit through 2026 while palladium and rhodium record small surpluses, with demand down 8 percent for platinum, 9 percent for palladium and 6 percent for rhodium as gasoline car output falls.

How much is a catalytic converter worth in the UAE?

There is no transparent UAE catalytic converter price index. That is the honest starting point, and it explains most of the spread you will be quoted. The only UAE-specific per-unit figures we could find come from Recohub, which published an average of $150 to $700, or AED 550 to 2,570, for the UAE and Gulf region in September 2026, with a wider range of $50 for small aftermarket units to over $1,400 for hybrid converters. Recohub is itself a converter buyer and recycler, so treat those numbers as one trader's published view rather than market data.

Vehicle category (Recohub, Sept 2026)Quoted range, USDApprox. AEDStated total PGM content
Small cars (Yaris, City class)$50 to $200AED 184 to 7353 to 5 g
Medium sedans (Camry, Accord class)$150 to $400AED 551 to 1,4695 to 8 g
Large SUVs (Land Cruiser, Patrol class)$300 to $700AED 1,102 to 2,5708 to 12 g
Hybrid unitsup to $1,400+up to AED 5,140+not stated

For contrast, the same source puts UAE replacement cost for a catalytic converter at $900 to $4,500. The scrap credit never comes close to covering the replacement, which is why workshops should treat the converter as a recovered asset to be documented rather than a rounding error on the job card. Bulk listings on Indian trading portals tagged to Dubai show converter scrap at figures like INR 190 per kg, but those are shell and pipe prices, not PGM-bearing monolith prices, and they are not comparable.

How do you build your own price from contained metal?

Convert the spot prices into dirhams per gram and work from there. At the 18 October 2026 quotes and the 3.6725 peg, platinum is AED 194.20 a gram, palladium AED 134.18 a gram and rhodium AED 1,003.62 a gram. At $9,150 an ounce, rhodium is about AED 1,080 a gram. Kitco independently published rhodium at $273.28 a gram on the same date, which confirms the arithmetic.

The table below is a worked model, not a dataset. The gram loadings are illustrative archetypes we built to show how the maths behaves, and real loadings vary by part number, emissions standard and model year. The final column is the useful one: it shows what each archetype would have been worth with platinum and palladium held at today's spot and rhodium alone put back at its March 2021 peak.

Archetype (illustrative loadings)Pt / Pd / Rh, gramsGross value, USDGross value, AEDChange vs rhodium at $29,800
Small petrol hatch1.0 / 1.5 / 0.3$190AED 697-52%
Mid petrol sedan2.0 / 3.0 / 0.5$352AED 1,293-49%
Large petrol SUV (often two fitted)3.5 / 5.0 / 1.0$641AED 2,354-52%
Diesel DOC/DPF, platinum heavy4.0 / 1.0 / 0.1$275AED 1,011-20%
Hybrid, high loading3.0 / 5.0 / 1.2$669AED 2,458-55%

Read the last column twice. Petrol three-way material has lost roughly half its contained value to the rhodium reset, while platinum-heavy diesel DOC and DPF material has lost about a fifth, because diesel is a platinum story and platinum is at record highs. Any buyer still applying a blanket "diesel converters are worth less" discount in a Musaffah or Al Quoz yard is working from a 2019 rule book.

Why is a cash offer 20 to 40 percent below assay settlement?

A spot buyer is pricing four risks at once: metal price movement over a 30 to 90 day settlement cycle, de-canning labour and loss, assay variance on a mixed lot, and the fact that he can read the part number stamp better than you can. Settlement from a refiner strips value in a defined order, so model it before you compare the two routes.

Refiner terms on the AED 2,354 SUV basketNet to sellerShare of gross contained value
85% metal recovery, 85% payable, AED 90 treatment, 2% refiningAED 1,57767%
90% recovery, 90% payable, same chargesAED 1,77976%
95% recovery, 95% payable, same chargesAED 1,99285%

So a unit that settles at AED 1,550 to 1,900 through a refiner should attract a spot cash offer of roughly AED 930 to 1,520 once the 20 to 40 percent discount is applied. That gap is the price of certainty and immediate payment. On ten mixed units from a workshop it is not worth chasing. On 500 units off a fleet retirement it is the whole negotiation.

How do you read a refiner's terms sheet?

  1. Establish the sampling method in writing. Handheld XRF on a whole monolith reads the surface, not the core. Crush, blend and lot sampling with a retained split for umpire assay is the defensible method on a large lot.
  2. Separate recovery rate from payable rate. They are two different deductions and some terms sheets present only one of them.
  3. Get the treatment charge as a stated figure per kilogram or per lot, not a percentage buried in a schedule.
  4. Get the refining charge per ounce or as a flat percentage, per metal.
  5. Fix the pricing date. Date of receipt, date of assay and seller's option within a stated window produce very different outcomes on a metal that moved 5.6 percent in 30 days.
  6. Confirm the settlement period, typically 30 to 90 days, and who carries freight and insurance to the refinery.
  7. Ask who holds the umpire sample and who pays for the umpire assay if results diverge.

If this feels familiar, it is the same discipline that governs precious metal lots generally. The reasoning we set out on why scrap gold sales in the UAE need an audited refiner applies almost line for line to PGM-bearing autocatalyst, with the added complication that nobody can see inside the can.

How much rhodium is actually in a converter?

Published loading tables contradict each other badly, and that is a useful fact rather than an inconvenient one. A Polish converter specialist, katalizatorychrzanow.pl, updated in November 2026, gives a typical passenger car converter as 2 to 4 grams platinum, 2 to 4 grams palladium and 0.02 to 0.05 grams rhodium. We believe that rhodium figure is wrong or a unit artefact, because it is an order of magnitude below every other published source, so do not price against it. rrcats.com, also updated around November 2026, simply says most converters hold 1 to 7 grams of PGMs in total depending on manufacturer, engine size and emissions standard. Recohub's bands of 3 to 12 grams total sit above both.

Both specialists agree on the one thing that matters for the UAE mix: petrol converters are palladium-dominated and diesel units rely on platinum. Beyond that, the disagreement is the argument for assay. When the public tables differ by a factor of ten on the most valuable metal in the device, accepting a per-unit quote based on vehicle make is a guess dressed as a price.

Can you legally sell a catalytic converter in the UAE?

Federal Law No. 12 of 2018 on Integrated Waste Management, issued on 18 December 2018 and running to 34 articles, covers every phase from production through sorting, transport, storage, recycling, treatment and disposal, and makes the competent local authority in each emirate responsible for waste management in its area. That is why the rules you follow in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah are not identical. Article 13 obliges the competent authority to manage hazardous waste to environmental, health and safety standards with a periodic monitoring programme, and the law empowers the Ministry to oblige entities to reuse or recycle particular waste streams. Federal Law No. 24 of 1999 supplies the underlying hazardous waste definition, and the executive regulations sit in Cabinet Resolution No. 39, cited on u.ae as recently as November 2026. Dubai operates its own Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021 to 2041 through the Municipality's Waste Management Department.

Export is the live question. MoCCAE issues the permit to export hazardous waste, and the federal fee schedule for exporting industrial waste, updated around November 2026, lists scrap steel and copper waste at AED 400 per tonne, used cooking oils at AED 400, scrap electrical and electronic equipment at AED 300, paper at AED 140, and aluminium and rawhide at AED 100 per tonne. Catalytic converters are not named anywhere on that schedule. The UAE is a party to the Basel Convention, so a cross-border converter lot needs its classification settled before anyone quotes a landed price. Our guide to why hazardous waste exports from the UAE need a Basel permit sets out how that process runs in practice.

On workshops, be careful what you repeat. Two commercial websites, Recohub in mid-2026 and productregistrationdubai.com in July 2026, both describe fines reaching AED 50,000 and licence revocation for garages involved in illegal converter removal, plus an AED 1,000 fine and 30-day vehicle impoundment for non-approved parts. We could not corroborate either claim against a government source, and both sites sell related services. Treat the figures as unconfirmed, and check with Dubai Municipality, the RTA or MOIAT before you build a compliance policy on them.

Why does chain of custody decide whether your converters are sellable at all?

UAE police action against converter theft is documented, though the reporting is older than most people assume. Khaleej Times reported in May 2022 that police across the Emirates had seen a spike in converter theft over the previous two years, with the crime turning organised. In April 2023 it reported that a gang of four was jailed and ordered deported in Dubai, in a case that began when a driver reported the converter stolen from a company bus. Earlier, in December 2018, Gulf News reported Dubai Police arresting four men for stripping parts from vehicles parked in the Jebel Ali and Al Qusais industrial areas. We have not found more recent enforcement reporting, so treat this as history that shaped buyer behaviour rather than a current wave.

The consequence is commercial. Serious buyers now purchase only from licensed entities that can evidence where the units came from, a practice pmrcc.com described in February 2026 as the standard across the regulated converter trade. If you are a fleet operator in KEZAD, Dubai Industrial City or JAFZA, assemble the pack before you list: VIN list matched to each unit, deregistration or scrapping certificates, workshop job cards for replacement units, your trade licence, and a buyer whose identity you can verify. We KYC-verify every counterparty through UAE PASS for exactly this reason, and escrow through MyFatoorah means the cash is committed before the material moves across an emirate boundary.

How should a fleet sell 500 converters instead of one van at a time?

Run the batch arithmetic first. At the Recohub band of AED 550 to 2,570 a unit, 200 units is worth AED 110,000 to 514,000 and 500 units is worth AED 275,000 to 1,285,000. Closing a 25 percent per-unit discount on a 500-unit retirement is worth AED 68,750 to 321,250, which pays for a tender process many times over. Selling van by van to whoever calls at the depot gate gives that money away.

  1. Inventory every unit by part number, photograph the stamp, and weigh the whole can. Part number drives value more than vehicle make.
  2. Keep units whole. Gutted shells attract suspicion, destroy the assay basis and may expose you to enforcement risk.
  3. Build the document pack described above, and keep it with the lot from the depot to the buyer's weighbridge.
  4. Split the lot. Send a representative sub-lot for de-can and assay to establish your real contained value, then use that number to price the balance.
  5. Tender on a stated basis. Either a percentage of contained metal at a named pricing date, or fixed AED per unit by part number group. Mixing the two invites a re-trade on collection day.
  6. Run sealed bids with a closing time, a 48-hour inspection window after delivery, and escrow release on acceptance.

Cross-emirate movement is where most of these deals wobble, because a lot leaving Musaffah for a buyer in Sharjah's Al Sajaa or Ras Al Khor crosses two regulatory jurisdictions and one haulage contract. Set the inspection point, the rejection criteria and the weighbridge in the terms, not in a WhatsApp message. You can list PGM-bearing lots alongside other recovered metal on the metals marketplace and let verified buyers bid against a documented assay rather than against each other's guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

What is the catalytic converter scrap price in the UAE in 2026?

Recohub published an average of AED 550 to 2,570 per unit for the UAE and Gulf region in September 2026, with hybrid units quoted above that. There is no transparent UAE converter price index, and Recohub is itself a buyer, so treat the band as one trader's published view. Our contained-metal model at 18 October 2026 spot prices gives AED 697 to 2,458 gross per unit on illustrative loadings.

Why did converter prices fall when platinum is at a record high?

Rhodium drove the fall on its own. At around $8,500 an ounce in October 2026 against $29,800 in March 2021, rhodium alone cuts roughly half the contained value out of a petrol three-way converter. Platinum-heavy diesel DOC and DPF material only loses about a fifth, because platinum reached an all-time high in January 2026 according to Johnson Matthey.

Should I take a cash offer or send converters for assay?

Per-unit cash offers typically sit 20 to 40 percent below de-can-and-assay settlement, so a unit settling at AED 1,550 to 1,900 draws cash offers of about AED 930 to 1,520. For a handful of mixed units the certainty is usually worth the discount. Above roughly 200 units, assay a representative sub-lot first and tender the balance against that number.

Is it legal to sell catalytic converters in the UAE?

Yes, within the framework of Federal Law No. 12 of 2018 on Integrated Waste Management, which makes the competent authority in each emirate responsible for waste handling in its area. In practice reputable buyers purchase only from licensed entities that can document the origin of each unit. Keep VINs, deregistration records and workshop job cards with the lot.

Do I need a permit to export spent catalytic converters from the UAE?

MoCCAE issues permits for hazardous waste export, and the federal industrial waste export fee schedule current to November 2026 lists scrap steel and copper at AED 400 per tonne and WEEE at AED 300 per tonne, but it does not name catalytic converters. The UAE is a Basel Convention party, so get the classification confirmed in writing before you quote a landed export price.

How much rhodium is in one catalytic converter?

Published sources disagree by an order of magnitude. One European specialist states 0.02 to 0.05 grams per passenger car unit, which is far below every other published figure, while general industry sources quote 1 to 7 grams of total PGMs per converter and higher for large SUVs. That disagreement is the reason to assay a sub-lot rather than price from a vehicle make.
