A chiller changeout at a UAE hotel is a metals sale wearing a demolition costume. Copper tube and coils carry roughly 70 percent of the recoverable value, and clean stripped copper was advertised by UAE dealers at AED 26 to 47 per kg in July 2026. If your retrofit contract says nothing about scrap ownership, the installing contractor keeps it by default. Fix that in the tender, not on removal day.

How much is HVAC scrap copper actually worth in the UAE right now?

Start with the benchmark, because every local bid is derived from it. LME cash copper traded at a record near USD 14,500 per tonne on 14 August 2026, with the three-month contract above USD 14,100 and the cash-to-three-month spread at USD 434 per tonne, a five-year high, according to Mining.com on that date. At the fixed peg of AED 3.6725 to the dollar, USD 14,100 per tonne is AED 51.78 per kg of cathode. Trading Economics put copper at USD 6.60 per pound on 4 September 2026, up 47.6 percent year on year.

Aluminium is a different order of magnitude. A live reference indication of USD 3,293.30 per tonne on 3 September 2026 (metalcharts.org, explicitly not an official LME settlement) converts to about AED 12.09 per kg. So one tonne of copper is worth more than four tonnes of aluminium. Keep that ratio in your head when you brief a demolition crew.

Now the local rates, with a warning attached. No UAE exchange publishes scrap prices. Every figure below comes from dealer, collector or aggregator websites, which are commercial pages with an incentive to look attractive, and none are audited. The spreads between them are wide enough that they cannot all be right at once. Treat them as indicative advertised ranges and as a starting point for your own bid comparison.

The trap is old rate cards. Pages published in May 2025 still rank well and still show scrap copper at AED 14.70 to 23.90 per kg. That is more than a year old and roughly half the current advertised clean-copper range. If your retrofit tender copied a scrap credit assumption out of a 2024 document, it is materially stale, because copper has moved almost 48 percent in twelve months.

Why does copper decide the whole number and aluminium fin barely register?

Look again at the two extremes in that table. Clean stripped copper transacts at 50 to 91 percent of cathode value. Insulated, contaminated or mixed copper transacts at 15 to 27 percent. That gap is not decided by your negotiating skill. It is decided in the first hour of demolition, when someone either separates the coil bundles onto a pallet or throws them into a mixed skip with duct offcuts, sheet metal and insulation. Dealers in Sharjah and Dubai make the same point on their own price pages: mixing grades drops the entire lot to the lowest grade in the load.

Aluminium fin is the opposite problem. At AED 2.8 to 5.5 per kg against copper at 26 to 47, fin stock is worth roughly a tenth per kilogram. It is still worth selling, but it should never dictate how a crew works. The economically correct instruction is blunt: protect the copper, keep it dry and free of insulation and steel, and handle the aluminium second. Motors, which mix copper winding with steel housing, sit in the middle and typically clear as a mixed grade unless the buyer strips them.

This is the same discipline that separates a good stainless sale from a bad one, where the alloy premium sits inside the nickel content rather than the steel. We covered that dynamic in how 304 scrap prices in the UAE track nickel rather than steel, and the lesson transfers directly to plant-room removals.

What does a typical hotel retrofit package actually yield?

Here is a worked example, and we are showing the assumptions so you can overwrite them. The equipment masses below are engineering rules of thumb, not measured weights. Replace them with manufacturer submittal weights from your own asset register, or better, with weighbridge tickets from the last similar job on your estate. Prices applied are the July 2026 dealer ranges above.

UnitAssumed metal content (unverified)Gross scrap value at Jul 2026 rates
500 TR water-cooled centrifugal chiller~1,200 kg copper tube, ~4,300 kg steelAED 39,000 to 61,000
250 TR air-cooled screw chiller~380 kg copper, ~520 kg aluminium finAED 16,000 to 25,000
Air handling unit, 12,000 CFM~45 kg copper coilAED 2,050 to 3,250
5 TR ducted split~14 kg copperAED 560 to 870

Stack those into a realistic package. A 300-key hotel replacing two 500 TR chillers, 18 air handling units and 40 ducted splits models out at AED 138,000 to 216,000 gross, with about 3,770 kg of copper accounting for roughly 70 percent of the total. That is gross, before rigging, cutting labour, transport, refrigerant recovery cost and any contractor share. Even after those deductions, it is not rounding error against a retrofit capex, and right now it defaults to the contractor by silence rather than by negotiation.

Who owns the scrap in an HVAC replacement contract?

Whoever the contract says. In the standard UAE mechanical replacement scope, the words are usually some version of "remove and dispose of existing equipment", and disposal is read as transfer of title. The contractor then sells the coils in Al Quoz or Al Sajaa and keeps the proceeds, which is entirely lawful if that is what you signed. Owners discover this after the skips leave.

Clauses worth inserting before the tender goes out

  • Title clause. State that removed equipment and all recovered metals remain the property of the building owner until sold by the owner, and that the contractor's scope is removal, segregation and delivery to a nominated collection point.
  • Segregation clause. Require copper tube and coils to be separated at source onto pallets, aluminium fin packs separated, and steel casings kept apart. Price that labour openly in the bid rather than paying for it in lost grade.
  • Refrigerant clause. Recovery, cylinder logging and documentation are the contractor's obligation and a pre-condition of handover for sale.
  • Weighbridge clause. Every outbound load carries a numbered weighbridge ticket with vehicle plate, date, gross, tare and net, copied to the owner within 24 hours.
  • Credit clause. If you do let the contractor market the scrap, fix the credit as a percentage of the actual sale invoice with proof, not as a lump-sum assumption written in a year when copper was half its current price.

Can you sell a chiller with the refrigerant still inside?

No, and no serious buyer will take it. Refrigerant recovery is a pre-condition of the metals sale, not part of it. A scrap yard is a metals processor, not a refrigerant handler, and a cut coil circuit vents whatever charge is left straight to atmosphere. The climate cost is not trivial: HCFC-22 has a global warming potential up to roughly 5,000 times that of CO2 according to the ICVCM in May 2026, and UNEP OzonAction puts the most common HCFC at nearly 2,000 times CO2.

On the regulatory side, be precise about what is established and what is not. Under the Montreal Protocol, developing countries agreed a stepwise HCFC reduction from 2013 towards complete phase-out by 2030, per UNEP OzonAction. R-22 remains legal to service in existing equipment even in markets that ended new production, as the US EPA restated in June 2026. We were not able to confirm a named UAE federal refrigerant technician certification scheme in our September 2026 check, so do not let anyone quote you a scheme number they cannot show you. Confirm the current requirement with MOCCAE and with your emirate authority, whether that is Dubai Municipality, Tadweer Group in Abu Dhabi or BEEAH in Sharjah, and in the meantime make recovery documentation a contractual condition. Certificates, cylinder serial numbers and recovered quantities in kilograms, filed with the removal pack.

How do you run the removal as a separate sale?

Treat the plant room like an asset disposal, because that is what it is. The sequence below is what works on a live hotel where guest floors stay occupied.

  1. Inventory before demolition. Model number, tonnage, submittal weight and refrigerant type for every unit coming out. This list is your sale document and your ESG evidence base.
  2. Recover refrigerant and document it. Certificates and cylinder logs attached to the asset list, quantities in kilograms.
  3. Segregate as you cut. Copper coils and tube on their own pallets, aluminium fin packs separate, steel casings separate, motors separate. Photograph each pallet.
  4. List the lot with weights and photographs. Publish estimated net weights by grade, location and access constraints, including crane or hoist requirements. Buyers bid harder on a lot they can rig without surprises.
  5. Take at least three bids. Buyers in Mussafah, Al Quoz, JAFZA and Ras Al Khor price the same lot differently depending on their own offtake. Post the lot on our metals marketplace and let verified buyers compete instead of accepting the first yard your contractor calls.
  6. Weigh at a public weighbridge and settle against the ticket. Not against an estimate, and not against a hand-written note.
  7. Close the loop for reporting. Tonnes by material, buyer identity and destination, filed against the retrofit's energy savings claim.

That last point is where the scrap sale earns twice. On AlKhiidma, counterparties are KYC-verified through UAE PASS, payment sits in escrow with MyFatoorah until the buyer completes a 48-hour inspection window, and the transaction record exports into audit-ready ESG reporting. If the coils leave your loading bay against a cash handshake, you have no diversion evidence to put in a sustainability report, and no recourse if the weight comes back light. Facilities teams running server and UPS disposals hit the same problem, which is why we mapped it in UAE data centre refresh cycles and the server parts market.

What should you do differently on the next chiller tender?

Three moves, all before award. Put a title and segregation clause in the mechanical scope. Get the asset list built at survey stage, not at demolition stage. And price the scrap yourself at current benchmarks, because a credit calculated when copper was near AED 25 per kg is not a credit today, it is a discount you are giving away. Frequently asked questions

How much is scrap copper per kg in Dubai in 2026?

UAE dealer sites advertised clean stripped copper at AED 26 to 47 per kg in July 2026, general copper scrap at AED 18 to 26, and insulated or mixed copper wire at only AED 8 to 14. For reference, LME three-month copper above USD 14,100 per tonne on 14 August 2026 equals about AED 51.78 per kg of cathode. Dealer rates are advertised, not audited, so take at least three bids on your own lot.

Who owns the scrap when a contractor replaces our chillers?

Whoever the contract names. Most UAE mechanical replacement scopes say "remove and dispose", which is generally read as transferring title to the contractor, so the coils are sold and the proceeds kept lawfully. Insert a clause stating that removed equipment and recovered metals stay the owner's property until the owner sells them.

Can we sell an old chiller with the refrigerant still inside?

No. Recovery must happen first, with certificates, cylinder serial numbers and recovered quantities in kilograms filed with the asset list, because a scrap yard is a metals processor and not a refrigerant handler. We could not confirm a named UAE federal technician certification scheme in September 2026, so verify the current requirement with MOCCAE and your emirate authority and make the documentation contractual either way.

What is a 500 TR chiller worth as scrap?

Our illustrative model puts a 500 TR water-cooled centrifugal unit at AED 39,000 to 61,000 gross at July 2026 dealer rates, assuming about 1,200 kg of copper tube and 4,300 kg of steel. Those masses are engineering rules of thumb, not measured weights. Substitute your manufacturer submittal weights or a weighbridge ticket from a previous removal before you budget against the number.

Is it worth separating aluminium fins from copper coils?

Separate the copper first and always. Aluminium fin stock advertised at AED 2.8 to 5.5 per kg is worth roughly a tenth of copper per kilogram, so it should never slow the crew down, but a mixed skip is the expensive mistake because dealers price the whole load at its lowest grade. In our worked example copper accounts for about 70 percent of package value.

How do we get competing bids from UAE scrap buyers?

Publish the lot with segregated weights by grade, pallet photographs, refrigerant recovery certificates and honest access notes on rigging. Buyers in Mussafah, Al Quoz, JAFZA and Al Sajaa bid differently depending on their offtake, so a documented lot on a marketplace with escrow and a 48-hour inspection window will beat a single yard quote arranged by your contractor.
